ADHD Information

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder describes the way some people’s brains work.  Both in adulthood and childhood it sometimes looks like anxiety and sometimes it looks like lack of discipline or organization.  Adults with ADHD are often judged as careless, disorganized, lazy, rude, and impulsive. Sometimes adults with ADHD self-medicate with caffeine, alcohol, and other drugs.

ADHD is a description of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that reflect how a person’s brain is operating.  ADHD affects the brain by altering the function and structure of key regions involved in attention, impulse control, and executive function. The condition is associated with neurotransmitter imbalances, particularly in dopamine and norepinephrine, and connectivity issues between brain regions, impacting the electrical processes as measured by brainwaves.  These neurological differences contribute to the characteristic symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity seen in ADHD.

ADHD may bring with it a range of potential benefits. These include heightened creativity, the ability to hyperfocus, high energy levels, spontaneity, resilience, passion, multitasking abilities, and empathy. When harnessed effectively, these traits can lead to success in various areas of life, particularly in environments that value innovation, action, and interpersonal connection.

Accurate assessment is the first step to addressing issues associated with ADHD.  Brain Health Center uses a combination of self-reporting and a computerized assessment that provides an objective measure of attention which identifies ADHD in 85% accuracy  and, just as importantly, demonstrates its absence when there is no ADHD.

The Brain Health Center provides EXEC-8, an 8 session approach to improving behavioral and cognitive skills that allows for real life solutions which strengthen executive functioning.  EXEC-8 can replace medication or be used in conjunction with medicine and/or neurofeedback.
